Li Se Manman-m', A New Film, Honors Haitian Mothers

belfim.com/pictures.php?p=2978&...How many Haitians out there do you know personally who refuse to admit that they are from the country side or that they mother lives in Cite Soleil?

There sure are many of them out there.

"Manman-w ak papa-w pase mizè avek ou, epi ou rive nan pozition, then ou refize admèt ke li se manman-w"

Haitian producer Godnel Latus AKA Baby Love has a new movie coming out that will address this problem in Haitian society.

The movie is called Li Se Manman-m and stars Smith Cassamajor, Suze Alexandre, Guerda L. Jacques, and Wilson A. Rodriguez.

In this new movie, Li Se Manman-m, you will be taken through a journey of a mother and father, desperate for a better life for their kids, who decide to leave the country side bound for Port-au-Prince.

There, they land in Cite Soleil, the biggest slum in the Haitian capital. The father spends his life working as a "Bouretye" and the mother walks the streets of Port-au-Prince as a "Ti Machann" only to be humiliated and forgotten by their only son who is so obsessed with "being a super star" and keeping up they the upper class that he vows never to let anybody know who he really is or where he is from.

He manages to cut all communication with his mother and father who worked so hard to send him to a good school.

I'm sorry, I don't even know how to translate "Bouretye" and "Ti Machan" into English because such a careers do not even exist in the United States but I will tell you, they are two of the worse things a mother and father can do to bring food on the table.

Godnel Latus told Belfim that Li Se Manman-m was actually shot on location in Cite Soleil.

In a phone conversation with Smith Cassamajor who plays the role of the father (Joseph) in the movie, I asked him "What did it fee like pushing a Haitian wheelbarrow in the streets of Port-Au-Prince even though is was an act?"

"I've didn't grow up with a silver spoon in my mouth" says Smith, "but we didn't have to do that to survive. having had that experience, I've developed the utmost respect for those who find the courage to wake up everyday and do that for a living."

Li Se Manman-m is coming to theaters around mother's day in Haiti. it will be playing in Capitol and Imperial starting April 2008.

The movie trailer is available on belfim here is the link to watch it: Li Se Manman'm Movie Trailer.
