PVS TV Aquires Rights To Broadcast Gason Makoklen 1, 2, &3

Productions Estimable gave the rights to PVS Communications to broadcast all 3 movies of Gason Makloklen on its national television network in Haiti.

What does this mean for the future of Haitian filmmakers is yet to be determined.

It is common practice in Haiti for Haitian television stations to broadcast movies, Haitian and foreign movies, without purchasing the rights or obtaining a license to the movie from the producers.

From what I understand, CONATEL, Haiti's equivalent of the FCC in the United States, regulates all the radio stations, television stations, and telephone companies in Haiti. They can literally strip the license of anyone who break the laws.

May be I am wrong but CONATEL seems to focus more on the "TELEPHONE" side of things. perhaps there's more money in the telephone business.

I am not familiar with the laws and regulations in Haiti that protect intellectual properties so I cannot comment further into the subject.

In the real world, no television station is allowed broadcast any movie or program unless they are granted a license from the producer or paid for the production. this is called "Original Run or First Run". The other option is "Syndication" whereby a television station has been licensed to broadcast a television show or movie/series by contract from the copyright holders, in most cases the producers.

Some people say there is no law in Haiti. If there is a CONATEL, there must be LAWS!

It's been reported that television first arrived in Haiti on November 1959 and the Haitian government television station TNH (Television National D'Haiti) was founded on December 23rd, 1979.

Since it's arrival, according to CONATEL, there now exists more then 35 Haitian TV stations broadcasting around the country. Amongst those 35+ television stations, PVS is forming RNTV PVS (Reseau Nationale Television PVS), a chain of Haitian television stations that air syndicated PVS programming.

So far here is the list of TV Stations that constitutes this RNTV PVS television network:

  • Chaines 16/67 Port-au-Prince,
  • Chaine 7 St. Marc,
  • Chaine 9 Gonaïves,
  • Chaine 17/68 Marchand Dessalines - Desdunes,
  • Chaine 5 Cap Haitien,
  • Chaine 6 Port-de-Paix,
  • Chaine 9 Les Cayes,
  • Chaine 4 Jacmel
  • Chaine 12 Petit-Goave.

In the information world content is king. In the television world this content comes in the form of television programming, TV shows, and movies.

It is an undeniable fact that the Haitian population crave television programming in Haitian Creole. 100% of the Haitian population speaks Haitian Creole and, surprisingly, many prominent television stations in Haiti are still broadcasting in French and airing old French movies that the French themselves have probably not seen in decades.

With such an amazing growth of the Haitian movie industry in the last few years it is really a shame.

Airing Haitian movies like Gason Makoklen, which is shot entirely in Creole, will most likely attract more viewers than these old French movies that bore me to death every time I go to Haiti.

Assuming that there is regulation and an entity to look out for the content owners, i.e. movie producers and television producers, we may begin to see an increase in the quality of the movies and TV shows out there.

As they [the producers] make more money, there will be more money to invest back into the video production business.

What will it mean for the Haitian filmmaker when they have full control over who can air their movies? I am sure we will find out.

If you are in the movie production business, perhaps Raynald Delerme an his staff will have a better answer for you. you can reach them by calling the PVS TV station: Haiti call: 718-6962 / 484-3606, International call: (305) 893-7547

If you have an opinion and would like to contribute to this subject, I would love to hear it.
