I will take your word for it as far is the movie Selavi being a good one, because I haven't seen it yet.
Being a filmmaker myself, when I watch a movie I do it with a different eye. I could say that I dissect the entire work, as far as technically and artistically.

That way you can tell how good the director is.
I agree with you about an actor knowing what they're doing but I have to insist on the director being in charge and making the decisions.

That's why we have something call auditions.

He can find out right on the spot if a potential actor will make it or break it.
Even when an actor passes the audition part and turns out to be a disappointment during filming, the director's job is to replace him or her as soon as possible otherwise he will regret it later on.
