It's Woodring, My Apologies to Ms. Carole!
belfim.com/pictures.php?p=1367&...No...
she did not call me and I doubt if she even knows about it...
Well she is about to find out! :)
Over the weekend, while accepting the award for best website at the Frantz Design Cinema Award, I mentioned that I have only received THREE awards in the last TEN years that I have been representing the Haitian community online and I said that they all came from Frantz Design.
Well I actually received FOUR!
I was reminded, with almost a slap in the face, as soon as I arrived at my house Wednesday afternoon.
Imagine what went through my mind when a got home and I went to hang my key on the wall, where I always hang it, right next to the golden plaque with my name on it in big bold letters that says:
Konpa En Action TV Show
Presented to
Woodring Saint Preux
For Your Hard Work In The
Haitian Music Industry
August 2005
I felt really stupid and really guilty because, as a person who tries his best to set a good examples for others to follow, I always make sure I give credit where credit is due. This very important to me and I know it means a lot to the few us who are nice enough to give credit and the very few of us Haitians who actually receive the honor.
A Haitian person is more likely to give you his money then to tell you "You're doing a good job" let alone give it to you in writing. This is one bad habit we are still fighting to get out of our system; it was burned into our brains since the slavery days and passed down to us from previous generations.
Being that I was fortunate enough to be exposed to a culture, the American culture, who is always ready to recognize good in people, always ready to give credit where credit is due, remembering what a wise man told me at Ramapo high school... to take what's good from both cultures... and to form a new identity, I try very hard everyday to make sure that I do not confuse a bad habit with CULTURE.
When you're wrong, admit that you're wrong.
When you make mistake, recognize that it's a mistake.
When you offend somebody, apologize and say you're sorry.
As Haitians we don't seem to do that very well... instead... Nou fe wont sevi kole.
That's not a good habit and we MUST get rid of it, otherwise, forgive me for saying this, we're fucked!
Did I get your attention?
I know it sounds like I am preaching to you... If you agree... Let me hear an AMEN!
Back in 2005 I didn't know Ms. Carole, I had never met her before but she found my phone number, she called me and she wrote me a letter to tell me I was nominated. Although I was unable to attend her event, I received the award in the mail a few days later.
To NOT correct my mistake publicly would be a grave mistake.
I don't know how you feel about her, I don't know how you feel about her movies but I spoke to a lady today who told me that she will never forget the name of FRANTSON SAINTILIEN aka Frantz Design because he gave her her first award EVER.
Like her, I should not forget the name of WADLENE JOSEPH aka Ms. Carole because she is the first Haitian person to give me an award.
Thank you, darling, I made a mistake, and I am sorry.
My name is Woodring Saint Preux and I said it.
Go ahead... Say it... I am sorry, I made a mistake!
Believe me...You will fee much better.
