filmmaking is an art!!!

Criticism is important!!!

I agree with you that haitian movies are really low budget.

The independent filmmaking industry is also low budget.

There are plenty films that are made that are low budget films and they are done very well.

What i see with Haitian movies is that most of the haitian filmmakers have no basic filmmaking abilities.

(NOT ALL)

If you can turn on the camera and press record, then you can come up with something decent.

Most of Haitian movies i see fail on many levels:

The storyline is too linear.

The characters are too one-dimensional, the dialogues serve not its true purpose, the pictures lack dept, composition, and richness, the editing is too obvious, the scenes are not build properly in advancing the story.

They need to spend more time in the writing process.

Movie start with a good script first.

There is lack of film writers in the industry.

I think the filmmakers need to realize their weaknesses and do something about it. Most of them need to go to school and learn about basic filmmaking, the history of motion pictures.

Film is an art just like painting, music, sculpture, dance.

They need to learn how to tell a story using moving pictures.

Film is also a visual medium.

Narrative film is aim at telling a story using moving pictures.

It has nothing to do with language.

I can watch a Japanese film and understanding the story without knowing the language.

Next time you watch a movie, turn down the volume.

If it is a good movie, you should be able to understand it without sound.

Sound is added to film. Film begins without sound.

As a mattter of fact, some great film theorists believe that sound is the worst that ever happen to cinema.

They claim that the introduction of sound in movies deviates or change the course of cinema.

in the past few years i have seen the emergence of many filmmakers in the haitian movie industry, most of whom have no basic concept of filmmaking.

they do it because they think they can make a movie or they have a story to tell, or they can afford to.

They get away with it because Haitians are supportive and tolerant.

Most of this filmmakers can't begin to compete with many students filmmakers.

there are many ways to tell a story or pass a massage: write a book, a short story, a play, a poem.

when you use film to tell a story, it is because that story is better being told in film rather than any other medium.

Film does what any other medium can't do. You can say the same for theatre, painting, music, sculpture etc...

FILM IS ART.

THE FILMMAKER IS AN ARTIST!!!

we need screenwriters in the Haitian film industry.

I met a number of people who told me that they've written 2 or 3 movies.

when i sat down with them and began discussing the story, i realize that what they have written is a short story or a treatment of their story.

Sometimes they don't even about script format.

writers are crazy people.

They talk to themselves.

they have all this crazy people in their heads constantly talking to them. Talk to a writer.

Writing is also about rewriting.

It can take up to 10 drafts before you finish the piece.

As a mattert of fact, a good writer never finishes a piece.

A good writer chooses to stop.

It takes a lot to write a good script.

Even the best writers need help. There are no movies in holloywood ever written by one writer even when one writer gets the final credit/award.

filmmaking is a process.

Please take time and learn it and learn well.

Remember if you can turn on the camera and press record, anything less than good is the filmmaker/director's fault.

There is great progress in the Haitian Filmmaking industry!!!

Don't blame it all on budget!!!
