Hands That Feed, New Documentary Film About Haiti

There is a new documentary in the works for Haiti called Hands That Feed. It is a non-profit documentary film that will explore the agricultural collapse in Haiti, its role in the post-earthquake food crisis, and the emerging grassroots sustainable agriculture models that seek to restore Haiti's rural economy and environment.

At this stage, producer Joshua Levin and director Matthew Caton are trying to raise the $15,000 they need to cover costs of an initial 2-3 week shoot in Haiti.

By the way...

If you are a Haitian filmmaker looking to raise money for a movie project, you may want to try KickStarter like they did. (more info here)

OK... where were we?

In a video on the Hands That Feed kickstarter project page, Joshua Levin and Matthew Caton talk about the purpose of this new documentary and it is mainly to "follow some major players in the new sustainable agricultural movement that is currently taking place in Haiti"

There are two topics that caught my attention when I was watching the video.

1 - The fact that 70% of the Haitian population is under the age of 30, "They want to do things," says Uma Viswanathan, program director for Nouvelle Vie, "but they don't necessarily even know where to begin."

2 - There's talk of a youth corps that will train Haitian young adults in community empowerment and sustainable community development

3 - A group of kids were asked the question "what is a leader?" to which they answered: "A leader is someone that takes power and take money from people"

Wow...

In order to change our country, we really need to start changing the minds of our Haitian youth and give them all the tools necessary to make them believe that they can make Haiti a better place, that they can have a future in their own country.

I hope this documentary come to life because I would personally like to see it.
