The biggest problems with haitian movies

Rodolphe - January 4 2009, 12:46 AM

before I start I should say that I'm a big fan of haitian movies.

Mostly because I'm haitian and I can relate.

Even though I live in usa a part of me is still in haiti.

I'm gonna state my biggest problems with haitian movies and how to fix them. help me out if I say something wrong.

1. Story
That's what make a movie.

Now I'm not saying all haitian movies lack a story.

I'm saying that most of them(i won't say names) have a bad one. The writers don't take time to make up something good, they just throw ideas together and that's it. We have enough movies about love, SIDA, and forbidden relationships.

They need to do something original.

Write a good action movie .That's why everytime I see something that's different I take time to watch it.

2. The pacing
The pacing of most haitian movies are slow. way to slow. In that case I strongly advise doing it like the american movies.

You don't have to spend 10 minutes showing someone walking.

Its a movies, fasten it up. I hate when I watch a haitian movie and they spend a long time showing me something that's not even related to the story.

most of the time I feel like shutting off the TV and read a book(i hate reading)
So please fasten it up. we are smart people, no need to show someone doing the same thing for 10 minutes.

We get it.

3. Production value
Now I know haitian movies are low budget.

but that doesn't mean they have to be bad. just take time doing them. plan it. plan everything.

know what you're gonna do before doing it. I have done better than most haitians directors.

check out www.youtube.com/carpediemseries
watch the trailer and see what I mean. I use a crappy camcorder, have no budget.

but I'm committed.

be committed.

4. acting
I know a good actor is hard to come by. specially if you're not paying them millions.

but just make sure the actors know their lines.

you can't act if you don't know what you're going to say. Don't let the actor do bad without correcting him. that's the directors job. don't accept mediocre stuff because you're haitian.

we can do better.

That's all I can say for now. please share you're thoughts.

I'm not trying to be cocky, I just think most haitian directors don't give themselves enough credit.

Also please comment on my trailer.
